International Tax IssuesAnswered

Our home-country audit changed the final tax bill for 2023. Do we always have to amend the U.S. return, or can Schedule C on Form 1116 handle it?

I am from India and became U.S. resident in 2024, but the issue now is older foreign tax. Our Indian tax advisor finalized a 2023 audit and the final tax is different from what we originally accrued for U.S. foreign tax credit purposes. My U.S. preparer says this may trigger a redetermination and possibly amended returns. Another adviser said Schedule C on Form 1116 might be enough if the extra U.S. tax is wiped out by carryovers.

I do not want to amend blindly if the instructions allow a cleaner route. I need to know when a foreign tax redetermination actually forces Form 1040-X and when current-year disclosure can be enough.
