We changed partnership representative this year. Does that new designation fix the prior year automatically too?

Our partnership finally updated the representative on the current return, but the old person was still listed on the prior year's filing. That raises an uncomfortable question about whether the current year's clean-up spills backward and fixes the prior year's representative issue too. The partners are hoping the latest filing resets the whole system.

I am skeptical because the IRS partnership-representative rules look very year-specific. If each annual designation only applies to that tax year, then the prior-year problem may still need to be addressed separately instead of being quietly cured by the new return.
