My spouse and child were here with me in F-2 status and had no income. Do they still need their own Form 8843 filings?

I understood my own filing better than I understood the family side of it. Because neither my spouse nor child had any income, I had assumed their part of the tax picture was automatically blank. Then I started seeing IRS foreign-student resources suggesting that family members in F-2 or J-2 can still have Form 8843 obligations tied to their presence in the United States.

I want to know whether that reading is correct before I leave the dependents out of the filing logic entirely. If the forms are really about exempt-individual status and not about earnings, then I need to make sure the family file is handled more carefully than I first thought.
