State Tax for Foreign LLCsAnswered

For a New York LLC, do I still need a registered agent if the state can receive service of process?

I am in Italy and qualifying a New York LLC for a consulting business with a local partner. I noticed New York has its own service-of-process rules through the Department of State, which made me wonder whether paying separately for a registered agent is still necessary.

The cost is not huge, but I am trying to understand whether the extra layer is just convenience or whether it actually reduces compliance risk for a foreign owner who is not physically in the U.S.
