We filed the SS-4 already and have proof of when it was sent, but the EIN assignment is still not back and a filing deadline is now in front of us. I do not want to improvise by using someone else's number or by making the return look incomplete in a way the IRS did not actually instruct.

What I need is the exact logic the IRS expects in this situation. If there is a specific way to mark the return and preserve the timing proof while the EIN is still pending, I want to follow that instead of guessing from forum posts.
