EIN & ITIN ApplicationsAnswered

My ITIN expired before I could file. Should I renew it first or send the return package anyway?

I only noticed the ITIN problem when preparing the return, which is obviously later than ideal. Now I am trying to figure out whether the right move is to stop and renew first, or whether the renewal is supposed to be built into the filing sequence so the whole package moves together. The last thing I want is a rejected return because I guessed wrong on order of operations.

I am not looking for a slogan like 'renew early' because that ship has sailed. I want to know how to treat an already-expired ITIN when a real filing deadline is now part of the picture.
